OK, OK...
I know that Bouguereau is not everyone’s favorite artist. And I’ll admit a certain favoritism for his work on my part. But it’s been almost a year since I ordered the Pieta Mass cards.
Yes, there have been a few negative comments, but no card is 100% popular. And we used enough that I did have to re-order. Until I came in to work this morning and found that the secretary had bundled all of the Pieta cards up and shoved them in my mail box with a note that said that the cards made people sad. And maybe we could persuade Barton-Cotton to take them back and give us a credit. (Sure...what with the name of our parish imprinted on them. Anyone who would believe that might wish to think I’ll be named a winner on American Idol tonight.) We’re supposed to be watching our spending, so I’m not going to chuck them all and order some treacly stuff with the fluffy clouds or the palid Holman Hunt rip-off Jesus knocking at the door. Maybe I won’t re-order them but I intend to hold on to those Mass cards. Pray a bit. And find a way to firmly yet tactfully replace them in the drawer. Religious art serves a purpose and as long as I am the one ordering the Mass cards I shall dig in my heals and do my best to stem the tide of saccharine tripe.
Oh, and Jesus with the Angel brings people down, too.
