The Amasong Chorus: Singing Out

A documentary about Champaign-Urbana’s Premier Lesbian/Feminist Chorus. Now that's what I call disturbing TV viewing at bedtime. I will agree that they had beautiful voices. What was never explained was the whole concept of forming singing groups based on sexual orientation. What next? The North Shore Diminished-Libido Gals A Cappella Experience?

I do see their advantage in having a singing group that can vocalize its agenda. They sang an absolutely lovely version of the 23rd Psalm. It took me a bit before I noticed that there was something off. The use of feminine pronouns throughout...(The Lord is my shepherd; she leadeth me....) One chorus member reminisced about being brought into the room of a dying man to sing this comforting piece and the palpable sensation that they were ‘connecting’ with his spirit. Indeed. If I had brought a group of singing lesbian/feminists to surround my father’s deathbed and sing a mangled version of the 23rd Psalm there sure would have been a palpable effect. Or perhaps it would have pushed him on his way faster.

Note to Embot: I know I encouraged you to join more ‘activities’ during your college years. Thanks for not joining this one. I am not saying this to particularly harrass any gay/lesbian people we know. Sex is private. Some things are private. And not good bases for forming musical groups.
