Rock my world. Not.
"What differences people in the pews will notice in the celebration of the mass really are minor," said Todd Williamson, director of the archdiocese's Office for Divine Worship. "But that's not to say they're not important." The changes to the General Instruction of the Roman Missal, a pastoral guide to the procedures of mass, include a call for a "sacred silence" before the start of mass, at the conclusion of the homily and after Communion.
There are already people who keep silence and bow before receiving Communion. This really isn’t a big deal.
But Rev. William Kenneally, pastor of St. Gertrude Catholic Church, 1401 W. Granville Ave., said the revisions "are only going to add to the very grave tension between conservatives and liberals" in the church.
"Maybe in another parish they would want these changes, and God bless them," said Kenneally, who adds that the new bowing "is clumsy" and an "external show."
"They start out with a premise that if everybody is doing the same thing externally, we will be united internally. That premise is hogwash.
"People love the Eucharist," he said. "They have a great deal of respect for it. There are cultural differences among Catholics, and silence is not always a sign of respect. Sometimes gathering is a sign of respect."
Poor Fr. Kenneally is really bothered by all this. He already emoted all over the place in Friday’s Sun-Times. I would like him to expound upon how yapping about golf scores, SAT scores and vacation plans is a sign of respect. No one is looking for perfect silence, but Lord have mercy, could people pipe down a little?
Do you get the vibe that I am thankful that these ‘hints’ may keep people like me from going postal some day, standing up and shrieking, “Enough already?” Not that I would - it wouldn’t be respectful - but I’ve fantasized.
Since when is bowing clumsy? Well, yeah, it’s clumsy when it adds 1.5 seconds to the time it takes for each person to receive communion. It slows the line down. Hey, we’re talking about God here. Jesus’ True Presence. Isn’t a little bow in order?
How many times would our prayer really translate into, “Lord, I’m not worthy to receive you, but I know you’ll understand that I need to get through this as quickly possible so I can get on to other things?”
