Prudence
Not one of our stronger virtues.
After a long and happy day celebrating Eddie's 14th birthday, I was already dozing when I heard a clatter in the hallway and the words "Silo - now." Weren't we full with gyros and cake? Who would want to go to the Silo?
People checking out a shooting, that's who. Those who stayed behind yelled, "Keep the doors locked, the shooters are loose." In my estimation, prudence tells one not to head towards a crime scene. And this isn't the first time I've seen the
'check it out' spirit manifest itself at an imprudent time. Although last night I could understand. They have friends who work there. I guess one friend was shot in the arm and a busboy they know was shot in the stomach. The girls were especially worried about a friend, a waitress who has, not unlike their own mother, a bit of a spunky spirit and quick tongue that might not be handy when dealing with the short-tempered and well-armed. But she's OK.
As it stands, I know more about the crime that the Trib was reporting. But they did roll a nice little plug into the brief report: The Silo, which sits just outside Lake Bluff's limits, was built in 1968 and is well-known for its pan pizza and sandwiches. The restaurant's distinctive building has a large silo that functions as its main entrance.
