Most Americans Say 'I Love You' Every Day
I had a college roommate who noticed the fact that I ended phone calls to my family with “I love you.” She decided to try it. And it wasn’t easy. She said her family never did that. They rarely said I Love You. They were a nice, loving family. But the words just did not flow.
Oh, well. I say it all the time. Maybe too much.
When I did door duty at the primary school I was always on the brink of saying “Love you, too” to the parents who shouted I Love You to their departing children.
I once ended a phone order to Domino’s with “Love Ya” and 2 kisses - my usual sign-off when talking with my sister. (The Domino’s guy and I have always had a cordial phone relationship but come on....)
When under some sort of stress (liking juggling 3+ phone lines at work) I catch myself with Love Ya tripping off my tongue. (I can just imagine the caller’s reaction: “Gee, honey, that nice lady who told me the Sunday Mass times said she loves me.” or “That woman who answers the phone at church is a real -------. Does she think telling me she loves me will get her some sort of employee of the month award?”)
Oh, well.
I’ll keep saying it. The challenge is to mean it.
