Let me be honest....
I don’t like my Illinois State Senator. So there is little surprise that I’m not impressed by her educational legislation. She was chief sponsor of Senate Bill 903 “which allows school boards the option of establishing and operating summer kindergarten programs for pupils who have made unsatisfactory progress during the regular school year.”
Summer school for kindergarteners who didn’t cut it during the school year? I, being from a kindergarten class which left one half behind to repeat, have always been under the impression that the biggest determinent in kindergarten success was maturity and some tincture of time would work out most of the problems. (By the way, I started kindergarten in 1960, the last year before Wisconsin moved the cut-off birthday for starting school from December 1 to September 1. So we had a lot of young kids who just needed another year. Moi? I was born in March, so I was an “old” kindergartener.) I would think that doing a summer school session because you bombed out in kindergarten would leave you with a bad feeling about yourself and school. Kids catch on pretty fast...
