An Official Motto for St. 'Blog's Parish?
Victor Lams proposes the following quote from Evelyn Waugh (as quoted by novelist and historian H.W. Crocker III) as the Official Motto of St. Blog’s Parish:
"There are countless horrible things happening all over the country, and horrible people prospering, but we must never allow them to disturb our equanimity or deflect us from our sacred duty to sabotage and annoy them whenever possible."
Give him your comments. I like it. (And I will not invoke it to justify my right to have an ‘obscene’ pumpkin on my porch that just happens to annoy the living daylights out of the lady down the street. Halloween is over and we all must move on.)
In fact it gives me just the lift I need as I am bracing myself to help hand out non-partisan pre-election material at Church tomorrow. These are simply informative leaflets to let people know where the candidates stand on Life Issues. This should be fun - because I know it is going to annoy some people. Big time. (One local candidate is obnoxiously anti-life and I still can’t believe the number of bumper stickers with her name in the parking lot at Church.) And there is a certain perverse pleasure (sort of like peeling dead skin off of a sun-burned arm) in standing at the door of a Catholic Church and having some people look at me like I am either pan-handling or handing out botulism tainted snacks.
